Between 2026-10-24 and 2026-11-07, 499 requests to migurei.ai carried the User-Agent of one of six AI bots, and only 105 of them (21.0%) could be verified as that bot. Measured by Parallel World (migurei.ai), from our own Cloudflare Worker logs. Parallel World measures how AI agents see and use a website.
The other 394 split in two. 176 came from IP addresses outside a list the operator publishes. 218 could not be checked at all.
The table
| Name in User-Agent | Requests | Verified | IP outside operator list | Could not check | How it is verified |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot | 149 | 71 | 78 | 0 | OpenAI IP list (searchbot.json) |
| Claude-SearchBot | 50 | 0 | 50 | 0 | Anthropic IP list |
| Perplexity-User | 59 | 0 | n/a | 59 | Perplexity IP list (see below) |
| meta-externalagent / meta-externalfetcher | 96 | 0 | n/a | 96 | None: Meta publishes no IP list for these |
| Applebot | 62 | 14 | 48 | 0 | Apple IP list (applebot.json) |
| DuckAssistBot | 83 | 20 | n/a | 63 | Web Bot Auth signature (RFC 9421), signer assistbot.duckduckgo.com; IP list duckassistbot.json not yet in our checks |
| Total | 499 | 105 (21.0%) | 176 (35.3%) | 218 (43.7%) |
Some details per row:
- OAI-SearchBot. 80 got a 2xx, 2 a 3xx, 67 a 404. 34 asked for probe paths.
- Claude-SearchBot. None verified. All 50 came from outside Anthropic's list. We checked against a copy from 2026-10-21; today's list has the same 14 ranges, so the list did not move. 47 got a 404, 3 a 3xx. 26 asked for the usual probe paths (
.env,.git). Most of the rest looked like config and secret hunting too:/firebase.json,/.s3cfg,/serverless.yml. - Perplexity-User. All 59 got a 404. 40 were probe paths. We cannot call these fake. More on why below.
- Meta. 4 got a 2xx, 7 a 3xx, 85 a 404. 47 were probe paths. With no published list, there is nothing to check against.
- Applebot. 15 got a 2xx, 47 a 404. 31 were probe paths. The 14 verified requests all asked for ordinary pages.
- DuckAssistBot. 20 carried a valid signature. 63 were unsigned. DuckDuckGo does publish an IP list for this bot (duckassistbot.json), but our log-time check did not include it yet and we do not keep the IP of unmatched requests, so those 63 stay in "could not check". 21 got a 2xx, 3 a 3xx, 59 a 404.
None of the probe requests got a file back.
Name is not identity
A User-Agent is a string. Anyone can type Claude-SearchBot into curl. Our guess (not measured): some sites let AI crawlers through rules that stop other scanners, so a scanner hunting for .env files gains by borrowing those names.
So "this request says it is OAI-SearchBot" tells you nothing on its own. Identity comes from something the sender cannot easily fake: the source IP matching the operator's published list, or a cryptographic signature.
If you allow or block bots by User-Agent alone, you are trusting the string.
Check it on your own logs
Step 1. IP lists. For each name, fetch the operator's list and test the source IP of each request against it.
- OpenAI: bots page, list for OAI-SearchBot at openai.com/searchbot.json
- Anthropic: crawler help page, which links its IP list
- Perplexity: bots page
- Apple: Applebot page
- DuckDuckGo: DuckAssistBot page, list at duckassistbot.json
Step 2. Signatures. Some bots sign their requests with HTTP Message Signatures (RFC 9421) under the Web Bot Auth draft. DuckAssistBot is one (signer assistbot.duckduckgo.com). Check the Signature and Signature-Agent headers and verify against the signer's published key.
Step 3. Names with no list. Meta publishes no IP list for meta-externalagent or meta-externalfetcher. Requests with those names can only be treated as unverified. That is not the same as fake.
IP lists move
Perplexity's list had 4 ranges on 2026-10-21. Today it has 10. Our log-time check used the older copy, and we do not store the IP of requests that did not match. So we cannot re-check those 59 requests against the new list. That is why they sit in "could not check", not "outside the list".
The lesson: check against a fresh copy of the list at the time you log, or keep the IP so you can re-check later.
What this does not prove
- This is one site over 14 days. It says nothing about traffic elsewhere.
- An IP outside the list is only strong evidence when the list did not change. For OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and Applebot, it did not change in this window. For a stale list, a mismatch proves nothing.
- The "could not check" column is neither real nor fake. It is unknown.
- Nothing here says these bots, real or not, behave the same on other sites.
