Drafted with AI assistance and checked by the Varaxon team. The offer at the end is ours: we built Varaxon Scan Hub.
December is when clients ask the awkward question: "So, did we actually fix what you found this year?" Year-end audits, cyber insurance renewals and budget reviews all want the same thing, which is evidence that findings were closed, not just reported.
Here's a short checklist for getting that evidence in order before the holidays, whatever scanner you run.
1. Pick one baseline scan per client
Choose the scan everyone agreed on as the starting point, usually the first full scan of the year or the one attached to the last report. Every "fixed" claim later is measured against it. If you have several scanners on one client, keep one baseline per scanner. Comparing a Nessus scan to a Greenbone scan as if they were the same tool produces false "fixed" results.
2. Rescan with the same scope and credentials
A finding that disappears because a host was left out of the rescan isn't fixed. Use the same targets, the same credentialed or uncredentialed setup and the same policy. Write down anything that changed.
3. Sort every finding into one of four buckets
- Fixed: present in the baseline, gone from a rescan with the same scope.
- Still open: present in both.
- Accepted: the client chose not to fix it, with a name, a reason and a review date.
- Not compared: the host or check wasn't in the rescan, so you can't say either way.
That last bucket matters most. A gap reported as "clean" is the fastest way to lose a client's trust.
4. Put exploited issues first
Check the open list against CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog. Anything on it should be at the top of January's plan, with a due date, whatever its CVSS score.
5. Hand over one document
Clients and auditors don't want five exports. They want one report: what was found, what was fixed and when, what's still open and who owns it, and what was accepted and why. Each line should trace back to the scan that proves it.
Doing this without the spreadsheet work
This is the work Varaxon Scan Hub does. You upload the exports from the scanners you already use, and it writes a plain-language report with your logo, ranks findings by real-world danger and shows what was closed since the last scan, with each line traced to its evidence. Fixes can go straight into ConnectWise PSA or HaloPSA as tickets.
