Rockstar Games has confirmed that digital pre-loading for Grand Theft Auto VI opens on Tuesday, November 10, two days earlier than the previously expected November 12 date. The game launches November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. 🎮
The number that stands out is the size. Rockstar says the pre-load is up to 212GB depending on the device. That is more than double Red Dead Redemption 2 and close to the 210GB figure that leaked from the PlayStation Store backend the week before.
Key details from Rockstar's announcement 📅
- PS5: unlocks at midnight local time on November 10, so it rolls across time zones
- Xbox Series X|S: unlocks globally at 12 a.m. GMT on November 10, which is the evening of November 9 in US time zones
- Code-in-box editions: expected at retailers from November 12, per coverage of the announcement
- Playable: pre-loading only downloads the game. Nobody can play before November 19
Why the size matters 💾
At this scale, storage and bandwidth are part of the launch plan, not an afterthought. Rockstar's wording is "up to 212GB depending on your device," so the final size varies by platform. Best-case download times at a steady speed are roughly 5 hours at 100 Mbps and about 30 minutes at 1 Gbps. Real speeds depend on your provider, your network, and server demand, and Rockstar hasn't published a download time.
The staggered unlock is worth noticing too. PS5 follows local midnight, so demand spreads across the day, while Xbox opens at a single global moment. I don't know how either platform handles the load behind the scenes, since neither has said.
Free Leonida map and poster 🗺️
On November 19, Rockstar will add a printable cover art poster and a map of Leonida to its official site as free digital downloads. A double-sided physical version is coming to the Rockstar Store shortly after launch for $0.99, or free with any Rockstar Store purchase. The map is not available at pre-load, and Push Square notes it isn't included in boxed copies.

Developers and players: what do you make of a 200GB+ digital launch? Do you think file sizes like this are sustainable, or will compression and install-size options become standard?
