arXiv:2611.07688v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Modular multilevel converter (MMC) has become an attractive technology for high-power electronics applications thanks to its high energy efficiency, high power rating, high modularity, flexible scalability, and superior output waveform quality. It has attracted considerable research attention, and numerous submodule (SM) variants have been developed for different objectives. Among them, the half-bridge SM (HBSM) is the most widely adopted thanks to its simplicity, but it cannot interrupt DC-side short-circuit currents. Various SM topologies with fault-blocking capability have been proposed. These SM topologies contain additional switches and passive components compared to the HBSM, leading to higher capital and operating costs. Aiming at these issue, an SM topology capable to block DC-side fault-currents with a reduced component count is proposed in this paper. The proposed SM includes two variants, one employs only two fully-controlled switches. An operation and control scheme for the proposed SM are also developed and presented in the paper. The functionality of the proposed SM is validated by experiment, and the value of the SM is demonstrated through a test simulation for an high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) transmission system.
