Hello internet,

I am trying to set up a home server where I can store photos and ideally still access them from my phone. I am not knowledgable at all in tech but am willing to learn. I thought I could use an external harddrive to run store all the files and programs to run it and just plug it into an old computer to run. Am I wildly off/over simplifying it? If not what/how does this work? I have heard of Nextcloud but then Docker comes up and that needs to run on Linux and then I am lost.

I have never used Linux but I think I could dedicate part of an old laptop to running it? Are there guides/walkthroughs/videos of some kind to help me get this started? Any and all help appreciated.

I have a capbable desktop and an old Window's Surface laptop. If needed I could probably dedicate the laptop to doing this but I need help understanding how.
