Every developer has a secret folder of shame. Maybe it’s a project called final_v2_REAL_final, or a commit message that says “fix”. Today we’re bringing those stories into the light with a classic game: Truth or Dare, developer edition. 🎲

No judgment here. We’ve all shipped something questionable.

How to Play

Pick one Truth and one Dare from the lists below, then share your answers in the comments. Short answers are fine, and long stories are even better. Afterward, challenge a fellow developer to play.

Truths

  • What’s the longest you’ve spent on a bug that turned out to be a typo?
  • What’s the worst variable name you’ve ever committed?
  • Have you ever fixed a bug by deleting code you didn’t understand?
  • Have you ever said, “it works on my machine”?
  • How many browser tabs do you have open right now?
  • Which tool or language do you pretend to know better than you do?
  • What was the first thing you ever built?
  • Which programming myth did you believe for too long?

Dares

  • The emoji commit: Write your next commit message using only emojis and let us guess what it means.
  • The one-sentence pitch: Explain your current project to a non-developer in one sentence, with no jargon.
  • The rename: Rename one badly named variable in an old project and share the before and after.
  • Explain it like I’m five: Explain an API, recursion, or Docker using a food or toy comparison.
  • The haiku bug report: Describe a real bug in three lines of 5, 7, and 5 syllables.
  • The old code tour: Share one cringe-worthy line from the oldest code you still have.
  • The compliment: Give a teammate a genuine, specific compliment about their code. It’s harder than it sounds. ✨

Why Play?

It sounds silly, but it's useful. It shows beginners that experienced developers get stuck too, and it reminds us that real people with real stories sit behind every username. It’s also good practice for explaining your work in simple words.

Ground Rules

Be kind, skip anything you don’t want to share, and never post API keys, passwords, or private company code, even as a joke.

Your Turn
