Hello DEV community! 👋
I'm building K-Hangang, a browser-based 3D riverside world inspired by the Han River, which runs through the heart of Seoul, South Korea.
The idea is simple: you don't always need a game, a goal, or an endless feed. Sometimes it's nice to take a short virtual walk and clear your head.
Try it here: https://k-hangang.com/world/
What visitors can do
- Wander along a virtual version of Seoul's riverside scenery.
- See different lighting moods, from daytime to sunset and night.
- Encounter other visitors and NPCs, and exchange a simple greeting or short conversation.
- Enjoy the experience directly in a web browser, without installing an app.
It's still a work in progress. I'm continuing to improve the characters, scenery, mobile experience, and performance.
A little about the tech
The world uses Three.js/WebGL in the browser. For shared presence and lightweight interaction, the server uses Node.js and WebSockets. I'm trying to keep movement responsive without constantly sending every animation frame over the network.
I also want the world to feel welcoming to people outside Korea, so localization and support for different screen sizes are part of the ongoing work.
The bigger idea 🌏
Seoul's Han River is the starting point, not the finish line. The long-term plan is to create river experiences for other countries too, with their own scenery and character, using a shared foundation. Those additional rivers are plans, not launched worlds yet.
I'd love feedback from developers and visitors:
Does the site run smoothly on your computer or phone? What would make a peaceful virtual walk feel more natural? And which river would you like to visit next?
Thanks for taking a look. 🌿
