In the early 1930s archaeologists found a small golden rhinoceros on a royal grave on Mapungubwe Hill, at the Shashe–Limpopo confluence in southern Africa. It is a carved wooden figure covered in thin sheets of gold. The shine was a skin.

Mapungubwe grew rich from a trade network (interior gold and ivory out to the Swahili coast, beads and cloth back), not from one mine. When the excavations came, the findings were largely kept within academia for decades and rarely reached the public.

For builders: check what the gold is fastened to

  • A dashboard is a finish. Trace each headline number back to the records it is built from.
  • Value lives in connections: link intake, quality, production and dispatch, not just one module.
  • Keep history. Drift (supplier quality, demand, conditions) only shows over time.
  • Data nobody can see is still underground. Put the record where decisions are made.
